The picture I chose to illustrate these lyrics is from a Civil War Collection I found on the Internet. The Civil War has always held a certain fascination for my family, having spent several years in Virginia with a father who took advantage of our location to teach us about this Great American Tragedy. One of the great regrets I have in life is that, as an 11-year-old kid, I did not appreciate what I was experiencing. It wasn't until years later, as an adult, that I began to understand what sacrifices were made in the name of Freedom. Boys, like the one in this picture, went off to war--so many never came home again. If you ever have the opportunity, walk the fields of Gettysburg. It will forever change you. My brother David now participates in Civil War re-enactments. |
